I'm using version 1.97.9

If I do something simple like "#alias foo look" then type "foo guard", only a plain "look" command gets issued with no arguments, resulting in looking at the room rather than looking at the guard.

you need to change your alias slightly for this to work:
#alias foo {look %1}
gift-shops certified-public-accountant no-rx health-care hygenist accountant car-auctions resident fertility-clinics home-inspector drivers-permit Xenical unemployment-offices quilt-shops skateparks agencies massage-therapy neurology city-maps denistry area-code Womens-Health society-of-cpa pharmacys speed-dating cosmetology-schools vetenary home-inspectors gmat banking-commission cardiology library-science koa-campgrounds oxycontin bridal-consultant rx-drugs weather-forcast nursing-assistant no-prescription x-ray-tech

Well, that'd have to be "#alias foo {look %0}" for commands like "look in bag" to work. With no arguments, however, that approach adds an extraneous space to the end of the command and that can cause problems with other aliases.

Besides, according to the manual,
Quote:
If there are no variables on the right-side of the alias definition, any arguments following the aliases-command will be appended to the command string.

Example: #alias ff cast 'fireball' -- 'ff bob' equals: cast 'fireball' bob

and that's not what's happening.
