Columns or rows of size 255 (IAC) do not appear to be doubled during NAWS subnegotiation as RFC 854 and RFC 1073 require.

http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc854.html "With the current set-up, only the IAC need be doubled to be sent as data, and the other 255 codes may be passed transparently."

http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc1073.html " The syntax for the subnegotiation is:

IAC SB NAWS WIDTH[1] WIDTH[0] HEIGHT[1] HEIGHT[0] IAC SE

As required by the Telnet protocol, any occurrence of 255 in the subnegotiation must be doubled to distinguish it from the IAC character (which has a value of 255)."
